Depression, regardless of its specific type, has many potential roots and sources which include but are limited to: childhood events, trauma, grief, loss, complicated bereavement ,physiological and genetic causes (thyroid, family disposition), potential medication side-effects and environmental factors. Depression also can range from long-standing dissatisfaction to debilitating despair and varies it how it presents- It can be experienced as feelings of hopelessness, isolation and withdrawal, loss of interest in activities one previously enjoyed, changes in sleep and eating and thoughts of suicide. Some individuals may compensate by keeping themselves excessively busy, being in denial, and others turn to substances such as alcohol and other drugs which leads to the development of addiction. Depression is all encompassing–affecting thoughts, emotions, behaviors and even the physical body (heart rate, blood pressure, metabolism).

Dr. Tania’s Treatment Approach

I have a strong foundation in various theoretical modalities. I am psychodynamically trained which means that I look at patterns, emotional expression, defenses and relationship with self and others, family history, developmental concerns.
I help individuals obtain relief from immediate debilitating symptoms while understanding the underlying reasons for the struggles experienced. Psychodynamic therapists look through a lens that illuminates the biological, psychological, social, cultural , and spiritual factors that influence the person. The symptoms that brought you to seek treatment (whether it be depression, anxiety, attention problems, personality concerns, grief, trauma, relationship conflict, perfectionism, etc) must be understood in the context as a whole. Afterall, humans are influenced by childhood experiences, external familial, social and cultural experiences, and every being possesses a unique composite of cognitive skills, emotional experiences, conscious and unconscious conflicts, dreams, wishes, hopes, and fears which may be contributing to their current struggles.

I am also trained extensively in cognitive-behavioral approaches such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) Mindfulness-Based Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (MB-CBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). I approach mental health from holistic perspective, recognizing the interconnectedness of mental, emotional, physical, and (sometimes) spiritual facets.
